Authors June Hayward and Athena Liu were presumably going to rise to stardom together: they both graduated from Yale at the same time and published their first book the same year. But, over time, Athena has triumphed in various literary genres and June has not yet known the honey of success. So when June witnesses Athena's death in a horrible accident, she acts impulsively: she steals the masterpiece Athena had just finished, a novel about the contributions of Chinese workers to both Britain and France during World War I. World War. Anyway... with what's happened, what difference does it make if June does some tweaking to the novel and sends it to her literary agent? And what if she allows her new editor to make her sign the novel Juniper Song, a pen name as ethnically ambiguous as the new author's photo of her on her lapel? Doesn't this important story deserve to be told, regardless of who tells it? So June thinks, and the New York Times bestseller list seems to agree with her. But June can't flee Athena's shadow forever, and the evidence begins to threaten June's (stolen) success. June is about to find out just how far she will go to protect her shameful secret and maintain the success she believes she deserves.
