Annette, una epopeya

Premio Alemán del Libro 2021

Weber, Anne

What leads a person to get involved and resist? What are you willing to sacrifice? What are the limits? What can she really achieve? With the force of an unusual language that has earned her the highest recognition of German-language literature of 2020, Anne Weber narrates this convulsive life journey that is, at the same time, a sharp reflection of the 20th century: the life of Anne Beaumanoir; and she does it in the form of an epic, an epic in feminine. A woman who joined the French Resistance at nineteen; she at nineteen and a half she disobeyed the rules of the movement when she decided to save the lives of two Jewish teenagers. Then came the career of neurophysiology, marriage, children... The war had ended and it seemed that her life was redirected along more conventional paths, but a few years later the Algerian War broke out, which offered Annette the opportunity to oppose a new form of resistance on behalf of the National Liberation Front (FLN), which is why she ended up being arrested and sentenced to ten years in prison. After a hazardous escape, she arrived first in Tunisia and then in Algeria, where she was part of the first independent government under the orders of Ben Bella, until a coup d'état forced her to flee again... This is her life in a few words. But how to count Annette's hopes and aspirations, her doubts and her exploits? Wouldn't it be better to sing them?
