Armonías económicas

Bastiat, Frédéric

In a time of new illiberal temptations, those voices that promptly warned of the dangers of state coercion become even more relevant. The most authoritative of these voices was that of Frédéric Bastiat, who rose up against the usurpation of our freedom by state interventionism and against the social engineering that sought to create a new man. Economic Harmonies constitutes a precocious refutation of the socialist thesis on the class struggle by the greatest disseminator of economic liberalism of all time. Bastiat's original proposal, consisting of defending the existence of a spontaneous economic balance between the different sectors of society, led him to contradict the socialist visions of the time, which understood the social body as an arena of antagonistic interests. It is a fresh work, as valid today as when it was written, and not without optimism, which reminds us of the main theses in favor of individual freedoms and laissez faire. In its pages we will find an enthusiastic plea in favor of private property, free relations based on voluntary contracts and economic competition as the engine of prosperity.
