Atila
Coll, Aliocha
Atila is an excellent example of the particular literary work of the Spanish writer Aliocha Coll, who dedicated his last years to finishing this book and ended his life of his own free will shortly after finishing it. Atila was published posthumously a year after his death, in 1991, and can therefore be read as the last will of the author, who in this novel captured the features that have always characterized his literature: an experimentation so extreme that it is difficult to speak of a narrative in traditional sense, although at the same time the formal care of each page is recognized. The rhythm of his prose, the variety and originality of his images, and the beauty and plasticity that can be seen in all of his sentences present an author with undeniable talent, although it is difficult to follow his speech. It is a type of text, as has been said before, that can be read as if it were surrealist poetry instead of a novel, although Aliocha Coll's purpose was precisely to subvert the molds of the genre: to do with literature the same thing as Mondrian had done with the plastic arts, as he once assured.
