Breve historia de Cleopatra
Novillo, Miguel Ángel
The figure of Cleopatra is one of the most attractive in ancient history, not only because of her legendary beauty, but also because of the factors that surrounded her life: her relationship with Julius Caesar, her relationship with Marco Antonio, both involved in the turbulent episodes that turned the Roman republic into an empire, and finally the tragic death of the queen of Egypt. Unfortunately, many episodes of her life have been misrepresented, either by the hand of historians related to Emperor Octavio, or by the hand of playwrights and filmmakers who later dealt with Cleopatra's life. A Brief History of Cleopatra aims to discover what is true under the cloak of mythology that surrounds the most famous queen of Egypt. Cleopatra VII Nea Thea Philopator, Cleopatra who loves her people, was, far from the image of frivolous femme fatale that has come down to us, an excellent statesman, tremendously educated and an ambitious regent who intended to create an Egyptian-Roman empire, with the to spread throughout the world the Hellenistic knowledge housed in the Library of Alexandria. This is the historical image that Miguel Ángel Novillo wants to send us, using the most current sources for it. We will thus attend the conspiracy to dethrone the queen that will lead her to ally with Julius Caesar and give her a son, the result of this alliance will be the murder of all opponents of Cleopatra, including her brother Ptolemy XIII with whom he was married according to the customs of the Ptolemaic saga; We will also live the queen's turbulent relationship with Marco Antonio, after the assassination of Caesar, another strategic decision that had the purpose of moving the capital from Rome to Alexandria and creating a universal Hellenistic culture, the defeat at Actium in 31 a. C. will frustrate the queen's plans and precipitate her suicide with Marco Antonio in circumstances not yet clarified. In the end, Cleopatra's plan to maintain Egypt's greatness and independence failed, and the noble people of the Nile eventually became a Roman province ruled by Rome's first emperor, Octavian Augustus.
