The name of the first poet of Western lyric poetry comes to us surrounded by mystery. A mystery that all ages have wanted to unravel by attributing to him more or less fanciful biographies in a continuous recreation of his image. But above the speculations about his private life, we are left with fragments of a conscious and elaborate poetic art, singularly expressive within an apparent simplicity and creator of a new language to express love. A forerunner and model of writers, both ancient and modern, Sappho presents a world made to measure for women, but for a woman who speaks and wants, who lets her voice be heard through singing and poetic creation.
