This work is the story of the life of Cervantes during all the time he lived outside of Spain, from the age of twenty-one to thirty-four, according to the content of a manuscript found in Oran which, according to the author of this novel, conjectures , could have been dictated by Cervantes himself. After his flight from Madrid, Miguel embarks in Cartagena in the galley Santiago, disembarks in Massa-Carrara and crosses all of Italy, up to Ancona, in the company of Prince Alberico Cybo-Malaspina. There he starts business as a money changer with the Mendes-Nasi family, of Portuguese converts, between Ancona, Ragusa (Dubrovnik) and Trieste, acting on behalf of the Prince of Eboli, also acting as a spy and sharing his information with the Viceroy of Naples. . He then goes to work for don Juan de Austria, Captain General of the Holy League, under whose command he participates in the Naval Battle of Lepanto and, after treating his wounds, in those of Navarino and Tunis, together with the brother of he Rodrigo. When trying to return to Spain, the brothers are captured by the Barbary pirates of Algiers, where Miguel remains captive for five years, starring in several episodes of flight with serious risk to his life. After being rescued he returns to Spain, but the court, then in Lisbon, sends him as a spy to Oran, from where he returns to Lisbon, and from there he leaves for Madrid in December 1581.
