Cossos celestes

Man Booker International Prize 2019

Alharthi, Jokha

In the village of Awafi, in Oman, live three sisters: the Maya, who will marry Abdullah after a love disappointment; Ashma, who will accept a husband according to the tradition, and Khaula, who will reject all marriage proposals while waiting for her lover, who has emigrated to Canada. These three women and their families will witness the evolution of Oman's society and customs: from a traditional community, where slaves still exist, to the encounter with today's world, after a slow evolution during the colonial era. A story that perfectly reflects the clash between tradition and legend and the contemporary world.
