Vivian Gornick recounts that one day she began to reread Howards End and to her great amazement discovered that her interpretation of the novel, years after its first reading, was now radically different. Aware that there is nothing like returning to a place that has not changed to discover how oneself has changed, she decided to take up those crucial books that made her the woman she is, and reread them, with the purpose of rediscovering herself.
