The Cold War was the name given to the direct and non-military confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union between 1947 and 1991. After World War II, both countries acquired a new international status of superpowers, as a consequence of their military power, their global interests, the influence of their respective ideological and social models over large territories, as well as the number of different types of nuclear weapons they used as an instrument of deterrence. Understanding what the Cold War was and to what extent it was inevitable, who were its protagonists and what were the crucial decisions and conflicts of this time is the goal of this book.
