Yakovenko, Margaryta

The story of Daria Kovalenko Petrova -born in Ukraine in 1992 but soon transferred to Spain- is constituted as a vanishing point to which the story of a love break in the age of Instagram ends, the reconstruction of a family story marked by migration, economic difficulties and the testimony of a generation that has assumed its material conditions as a state of permanent crisis. At the same time, the biography of our character houses the story of two disappointments: that of the Soviet Union in the 20th century and that of Western society in the 21st century. Influenced by the fiction of Zadie Smith, the lyrics of Anne Carson or the journalism of Svetlana Aliexevich, Margaryta Yakovenko's debut feature stands out particularly for its ability to entangle a subjective story in a complex socio-political fabric, and for the unique nature of its narrator : captivating both for its fragility and for its forcefulness.
