After the unexpected death of millionaire Richard Abernethie, his family gathers to read the will: the estate is to be divided equally among the members, although some seem unhappy with this arrangement. When Richard's sister Cora claims that Richard has been murdered, everyone puts it down to his eccentric character and thinks nothing of it. The next day, however, Cora is brutally murdered, and her words take on a new nuance. Each of the members had a reason to keep their share of the inheritance and no one has a convincing alibi. Who stood to gain the most from the two deaths? Hercule Poirot is charged with solving this crime where appearances can be deceiving.
