To what extent can we compare artistic research with scientific research? Historians have long drawn a clear separation between these two investigations, but the development of contemporary art has created a different situation by declaring its status as "research." Vilar analyzes the different types of research, their bases, functions, effects and establishes a relationship that, not because it is problematic, is less important. In this way, a new horizon opens up for aesthetic and historiographic reflection, for the use of new materials and techniques, original functions, as well as for the understanding of the nature and scope of current art.
