1810. In the middle of the Napoleonic war, Mercedes Velarde undertakes a trip to Santander together with her brothers, Salvador and Marta, to take possession of an inheritance. Colonel of the Imperial Gendarmerie Claude Cornulier arrives in Santander to investigate a series of complaints of abuses within the occupation army itself and to resolve the discomfort of French civilians living in the city, whose protests, due to the damage caused by the Governor Barthélémy, have arrived in Paris. In addition, at the head of the gendarmerie regiment, Courlier must keep communication routes open in the province and organize escorts to the supply columns. On a trip to San Vicente de la Barquera, he meets a mysterious woman in the car of the line: Mercedes Velarde. Lieutenant Alfonso Bustamante lives in retirement in the Liébana valley due to the wounds received in the battle of Trafalgar. His injuries do not allow him to take up arms, but they do allow him to organize a network of informants to harass the invading forces from the headquarters of the Cantabrian Division, located in Potes. Together with Porlier and Llano Ponte, he leads the guerrillas that harass the French army in the region. His lonely life is altered when she crosses paths with the Velarde brothers and strangely entrusts her with him.
