Tragedy has struck Her Majesty's Air Corps, whose magnificent fleet of fighting dragons and their human captains bravely defend the shores of England from the armies of Napoleon Bonaparte. An epidemic of unknown origin and no known cure is decimating the ranks of the noble dragons, forcing those afflicted into quarantine. Now only Temeraire and a group of newly recruited dragoons remain free of the infection, standing as the only air defense against the increasingly daring French raids. Bonaparte's dragoons are already destroying British ships on the high seas. Only one resource remains: Temeraire and his captain, Will Laurence, must fly to Africa, whose shores may hold a cure for the mysterious and deadly disease. In this mission there is no time to lose.
