Gaveral Rocannon begins his journey with the clear purpose of warning the League of All Worlds that they have been betrayed. But Rocannon's heroism will lead him to pay a very high price, for he will not only come to understand the gifts that distinguish Kyo and Mogien; he must also feel the simultaneous agony of a thousand dying enemies. The hero who concludes the journey is a broken man, exhausted and alone, who finally knows himself. This is a travel novel, through an obsessive metaphorical landscape, in which the final discovery concludes a long and complex process. On the cover: As the main motif, a sculpture of the iconic winged cats that serve as mounts for the novel's riders was chosen. At the end of the story, the protagonist will become a legend. It will be both in the backward culture where the novel takes place, and in the advanced civilization to which he belongs, thanks to his actions and the gift he obtains. The sculpture reinforces the mythical character of the protagonist's deed and that will even give its name to the planet. The structure of the previous covers of the Hainish cycle has been followed, adding elements of the story, such as one of the various towers and castles that appear in the story.
