El oso y el ruiseñor
Arden, Katherine
In the Russian steppe, winter lasts almost the whole year, and the mounds of snow are higher than the houses. Ice reminds Vasya of tales about Morozko, the mysterious king of winter, who brings frost and cruelly tricks young girls to keep their souls. As soon as her father returns from Moscow with a very devoted new wife, things change. The woman sees invisible demons in the eyes of everyone, except Vasya... Although for her they are spirits: like the vodianói, a man made of tree branches, or the fraser, the nymph who drowns the unwary in the lake. As long as the villagers keep making offerings to them, nothing bad will happen. But one merciless winter, when blizzards cover the houses with frost and fear seeps through the locks, the offerings stop coming.
