El pintor de los muertos
Puente Mayor, Antonio
Seville, 1672. When the banker Pietro Bertorelli is found dead in his palace home with a strange symbol on his body, the Inquisition opens an investigation. This leads them to a disciple of the famous painter Juan de Valdés Leal, who is working on a commission for the brotherhood of Santa Caridad. Convinced of the innocence of his pupil, the artist closes an unprecedented deal: collaborate in the search for the real murderer in exchange for the boy's freedom. What the teacher does not imagine is that, shortly after the investigation begins, two new corpses will be discovered in the same circumstances as the first. The Painter of the Dead is a thriller set in the second half of the 17th century, when Seville was struggling to recover from the terrible epidemic that decimated its population. A gloomy and at the same time fascinating scenario, in which religion and art, misery and opulence, sin and virtue, shared space, and where the talent of Valdés Leal made possible the creation of two masterpieces: the Hieroglyphics of the Aftermath.
