El tío Silas

El tío Silas

Le Fanu, Joseph Sheridan

Maud, a young woman who has just been orphaned, tells us how she is forced to move to her Uncle Silas's house, a stately mansion in forested Derbyshire, following the testamentary designs of her late father. About Silas, a mysterious old man whose character has undergone a radical change, going from being a dissolute libertine gambling fan to becoming a pious Christian follower of the theories of the Swedish mystic Swedenborg, weighs the terrible suspicion of having murdered a rich companion of game to which he owed money. Maud will share confidences and fears with her cousin Milly, she will suffer rude harassment from her cousin Dudley and will have to live with an evil servant and a hateful French governess. But a series of disturbing events will lead Maud to fear that her life is in danger in the shadowy Bartram-Haugh.
