When Captain Will Laurence sealed his fate by capturing the Imperial dragon egg from which Temeraire would hatch, he did not expect the direction his life would take. Together, Will and Temeraire proved their worth fighting Napoleon Bonaparte's invading forces. But now China has discovered that the dragon is in the hands of the British, and has sent emissaries to retrieve the creature. When Laurence refuses to hand him over, he has only two paths: the gallows or a dangerous journey with Temeraire to the Far East.
