There is something sinister and puzzling in Ottessa Moshfegh's stories, something that is both dangerous and overwhelming and provokes nervous laughter. All his characters are unstable beings who yearn for something they do not know if it exists, perhaps a gesture of tenderness, perhaps become better people. Still, they all seem to move guided by the most primal impulses. Weak, twisted, often stupid and cruel to themselves and to others: from this strange raw material Moshfegh manages to extirpate a dark and electric beauty and that in it what we see is actually our own reflection
