Francisco Fernández del Riego

o legado silandeiro

Cajaraville, Héctor

Francisco Fernández del Riego (1913-2010) was the main dynamizer of Galician culture after the abrupt cut-off caused by the Civil War and the post-war period. In addition to launching all kinds of projects aimed at recovering the presence of Galician as a language of culture in a kind of "second renaissance", during a large part of his long life he was the pillar around which joint work between intellectuals was organized from exile, those who remained in the country after the conflict and the new generations of Galicians who are emerging despite the difficult context of the Franco dictatorship. Among his initiatives, the creation of Día das Letras Galegas in 1963 stands out, a date to commemorate and celebrate our language, literature and culture. Sixty years later, Don Paco himself is the figure honored in this anniversary.
