Fulgentius
Aira, César
At sixty-seven, Fabius Exelsus Fulgentius is one of the most experienced generals in the Roman Empire. The military career eclipsed his humanistic vocation, but he went on to write an "autobiographical tragedy", breaking with the rules of the genre for having Fulgentius himself as the protagonist. Taking advantage of a mission through Eastern Europe, Fulgentius turns the various stops in the towns into stages where, with local authors, he can perform his great work. Through the fickle, megalomaniac and at the same time naive gaze of a general with creative aspirations, César Aira gathers a very fine irony to reflect on vanity and artistic beauty in a cruel and meaningless world
