Guerra de Jugurta
Salustio Crispo, Cayo
Gaius Sallustius Crispus (86-h. 34 BC) is rightly considered one of the great Latin historians. Member of a wealthy family, for a time he had a hectic political and military life, especially under the protection of Julius Caesar. Apparently, the death of the dictator meant for him the abandonment of public activity, to focus on writing and become the first professional historian of Rome. With a sober but profoundly moral style, the War of Jugurtha explains the war between Rome and the king of Numidia in North Africa between 111 and 105 BC. Reflective, pessimistic and skillful in the composition of scenes and characters, Salustio unfolds in his monograph a memorable political reading with which he tried to show the degeneration of Roman society, both of the aristocracy and of the plebs, in the last throes of the republican period.
