La comedia de la olla
Plauto, Tito Maccio
Titus Macius Plautus is one of the most important playwrights of antiquity. Born in Sarsina, in the region of Umbria, despite his notoriety, little is known about his life. What is certain is that, as an author of comedies, he was able to connect with the general public and achieved enormous popular success that no other later Greek or Roman author achieved. It is not surprising that he was imitated ad nauseam and that even Molière and Shakespeare looked to his works for inspiration. The comedy of the pot, one of his best-known titles, bases his comedy on the character of Euclion, an old man who becomes rich overnight thanks to the discovery of a pot of gold. His neurotic and ridiculous attitude serves the Latin author to show the most negative aspects that greed brings and turned his character into the stingy stereotype, very recognizable in Roman society.
