This book is like lightning in a clear sky. To say that the heroic, splendid, eloquent, and uninhibited novel has suddenly made a comeback in an age of almost pathological anti-romanticism would be inadequate. For those of us living in that strange time, the return -and the relief it brings us- is undoubtedly the most important thing.
