La desaparición de Majorana
Sciascia, Leonardo
In 1938, after boarding in Naples bound for Palermo, the Sicilian physicist Ettore Majorana disappeared and no one ever heard from him again. In one of his last letters, addressed to a colleague at the University of Naples, he expressed his intention to commit suicide. After several but clumsy investigations, the police attributed that decision to an act of madness; The truth, however, will not be so obvious. Attracted by this strange case, Leonardo Sciascia delves into the personality of this young and eminent scientist, and his relationships with his family and his colleagues, to point out other hypotheses. In this "philosophical mystery novel", as the author himself defines it, Majorana's early discoveries regarding atomic energy and its destructive power will come to light, with terrifying consequences in the Europe of Hitler and Mussolini. Perhaps in all this, together with his condition as a brilliant man of science, he lies the key to the most mysterious disappearance in the scientific history of the 20th century.
