La extraordinaria historia del rey Jaime I el Conquistador
la soledad del rey (1213-1251)
Barat, Juan Ramón
Some of his contemporaries called him James the Fortunate, a title that portrays the prodigality with which providence bestowed him, but history, which ends up recording both human exploits and miseries, has preferred to remember him under the name of Jaime the Conqueror. Both names reveal the personality of an extraordinary man. Despite the multiple adversities that marked his life, in decisive moments Jaime was always a character favored by fortune. Poets, minstrels and troubadours celebrated his military conquests and his love affairs, which were many and very notable. The stories that have come down to us agree on essential points: Jaime was a man loved by his subjects, envied by nobles and knights and feared by his enemies; but all, without exception, respected him. He was also a human being of enormous contrasts, as great characters in history often are. His Templar character, forged in austerity, clashed with the passion he put into each of the companies he undertook. For the rest, his pride and his belligerence never clouded his high sense of justice, his extreme honesty and his proverbial benevolence. The wind of the years that have passed has not been able to erase his traces. The traces of a man in whose career reality and legend intertwine.
