La gatomaquia
Vega, Lope de
Sánchez Jiménez, Antonio
(ed.)
In 1634, a year before his death, Lope de Vega published "La Gatomaquia", a burlesque epic in seven silvas about cat loves on the rooftops of Madrid. The little work was a success and readers recognized in it the best comic epic of our lyrics. a pair of lovers is broken by the interference of a wealthy hunk. Scenes include a notorious cat battle, hilarious bravado, and outrageous challenges. "La Gatomaquia" offers this humor (candid and black) and much more: social and literary satire, metapoetic comments on digression or ornament, and many acid reflections on old Lope's courtly ambitions.
