La luz en los lugares ocultos

La luz en los lugares ocultos

Cameron, Sharon

It's 1943 and sixteen-year-old Stefania has been working for four in the Diamant family's grocery store in the Polish town of Przemysl, winning them over with her songs. She has even made a promise to one of the family's sons, Izio: a marriage commitment that they must keep secret because she is Catholic and the Diamants are Jewish. But everything changes when the German army invades Przemysl. The Diamants are forced to move to the ghetto, leaving Stefania alone in a busy city, the only one who can take care of her six-year-old sister, Helena. And suddenly, someone is heard knocking on the door. Izio's brother, Max, has jumped off a train to an extermination camp. Stefania and Helena make the extraordinary decision to hide Max and eventually a dozen other Jews. And so the days go by, always waiting for the moment when someone knocks on the door, the one that means death. When the moment finally arrives, it is two Nazi officers who ask for Stefania's house for the use of the German army. With two Nazis downstairs, thirteen Jews hiding upstairs, and a little sister at her side, Stefania has one more dire decision to make.
