Shanghai, 1924. The first communist movements begin to undermine the power of the Nationalist Party and encourage the expulsion of foreigners residing in the concessions, the exclusive international neighborhoods of the city. Born into one, Darlene Long longs to see the real China, but the walls of her gilded cage stand high and she knows she will always be considered an outsider. On the other side of the city, Kai Tao organizes together with other university students to promote communist ideology and, although their paths should not cross, a chance meeting will unite their destinies forever while the city prepares for riots that could put an end to to everything they have known so far, including their history.
