One morning Rachel Deville is notified that her best friend of over thirty years, Adèle Prinker, a brilliant mathematician, has committed suicide. But Rachel, who is a well-known novelist, beyond the emotional impact also feels unexpectedly relieved, with an ambivalence of feelings that reflects well her story: a story of friendship, the most genuine friendship, but also of its dark sides: love and strife, unconditional support and silent rivalry.
