Three days after his return to the region south-west of Paris, after spending several years on the road, the protagonist already feels the need to leave again. He wants to fulfill an unavoidable objective, to take revenge on a journalist who had accused her mother of having applauded the annexation of her country to Germany. The author of these false claims lives a day away in the hills around Paris. "'So this is the face of an avenger!', I said to myself the usual morning when, before setting off, I looked at myself in the mirror". However: "I had not hatched any plan. It had to happen. On the other hand: there was one, there was a plan. But this plan was not mine". And so revenge ends in a party, a deliberate decision by the narrator Peter Handke: only what exists in real history has access to written history. And vice versa: the history that happens it only acquires reality if it is worthy of being narrated.
