In the summer of 1959 Joyce Haney, a housewife with two young daughters, disappears without a trace. The first to arrive at the house and notice her absence is her housekeeper, Ruby Wight, who, being African American, is immediately detained as a suspect, rather than as a witness. The detective in charge of the case, Mick Blanke, will try to connect the dots, but in the absence of evidence he will have to resort to Ruby's help to discover who is hiding behind Jocey, her husband, her neighbors and all the smiling faces that They live in this Californian town where nothing is what it seems and where clearly no one is telling the truth.
