With the express desire to keep her grandson away from the evils of the world, Malagelada confines Espardenya from birth to the family home on Passeig de Gràcia and makes sure that she only receives news of kind human actions and that she lives surrounded by knowledge. The distorted conception of the outside in which he grows up, however, has important consequences when Espardenya, a sensitive boy and conditioned by a great ugliness, decides to take to the streets to go to university. There he encounters the real world -friends, the student movement, love, poverty- and has to face the distance between good and evil, truth and falsehood, ideal and reality.
