Near Luella and Effie Tildon's family mansion looms the House of Mercy, an institution for disgraced women, women considered unworthy of living in society. Beneath that menacing shadow, the sisters grow up knowing that, even for well-to-do youngsters like them, freedom has very strict limits. Everything changes when together they discover a scandalous family secret and Luella, the oldest and most daring, decides that she has the right to do what she pleases. The day Luella mysteriously disappears, Effie suspects her father has made good on her threat to put her in the House of Mercy, so he devises a plan to save her. However, she makes a mistake and no one believes her story. From then on, Effie's fate will be in the hands of Mable, an enigmatic fellow inmate.
