A novel about the will to overcome oneself and the power of literature and culture as a springboard for social ascent. When your life has almost no value, you are bound to become a parasite in order to get out of the puddle you live in because of your marginal status in society. Fleas are parasites that feed on the blood of their hosts and in the 19th century, farmers, prostitutes or servants, such as Nofre, Elena and Sabel, became fleas in order to survive. Circumstances bring all three together in Valencia spurred on by the need to improve. These are turbulent times, Nofre and Elena will arrive in the capital fleeing their condition. There chance will bring them together with Sabel, who, with the help of her new colleagues, will find her chance to take back the reins of her future.
