la cultura LGTBQ que abrió camino en España
Vegas, Valeria
Free yourself is a well-deserved tribute to those artists, films, songs, and theater venues that brought color and shine - from sequins, of course - back to a country that had lived in black and white for too long. A tribute to that LGTBQ culture that, even in the most gray Spain, managed to make its way overcoming adversities, circumventing censorship and overcoming the mistrust of a society that was still far from being tolerant. Through almost a hundred entries arranged as a dictionary, the journalist Valeria Vegas compiles a multitude of references -and references- essential to understand the role that gays, lesbians, bisexuals, trans women and men, dragons, transvestites and allies have played of the collective in Spanish culture. A historical journey that begins in the sixties, with the premiere of the film Different and the emergence of Coccinelle in the middle of Madrid's Gran Vía, goes through the turbulent years of the Transition and reaches the beginning of the 21st century, reminding us that only one decade there were still territories of freedom to conquer.
