While her mother dies of cancer in a northern city, the narrator makes love to a woman in a hotel in Barcelona. She has a flight to visit her mother the next morning, but she will already be late. Shortly after, her lover abruptly and definitively disappears. When her partner returns from London to settle with her in a small apartment by the sea, she tries to be the calm that sustains the anguish of a body that cries for a mother and longs for a lover. "To love is to love always after my mother. I can't talk to mom, nor to Ella. My life has been suspended with the interruption of those two conversations." The author takes up that dialogue in this book to investigate the edges of abandonment and longing and try to understand a mother who marked the life and ways of her daughter with her overwhelming way of loving.
