In 1696, Christopher Ellis, an impetuous young man fond of cards and women, is sent to the Tower of London, but not as a prisoner. Thanks to an unexpected twist of fate, Ellis becomes the new assistant to Sir Isaac Newton, the renowned scientist who is also in charge of hunting down counterfeiters who threaten to bring down the English economy. With Newton's keen acumen and Ellis's skill with a sword, the peculiar pair of detectives prepare to solve the case. However, when their investigations lead them to a mysterious coded message about a corpse hidden in the Tower of Lions, the two investigators realize that something much more sinister is being hatched.
