Half a Yellow Sun recreates a period in contemporary African history: Biafra's struggle for an independent republic of Nigeria, and the consequent civil war that claimed the lives of thousands of people. With great empathy and the naturalness of a committed narrator, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie recreates the lives of three characters caught up in the turmoil of the decade: the young Ugwu, a housekeeper for a university professor with revolutionary ideas; Olanna, the beautiful wife of the professor, who for love has left her privileged life in Lagos to live in a dusty city, and Richard, a shy young Englishman who is in love with Olanna's sister, a mysterious woman who refuses to commit to anyone. As Nigerian troops advance, the protagonists of this story must defend their beliefs and reaffirm their loyalties.
