Nación
la caída de la monarquía católica : crónica de 1808-1837
Mateo-Sagasta, Alfonso
When did the current Spain arise? When was the Spanish state as we now know it constituted? The historian and novelist Alfonso Mateo-Sagasta places this moment after the decomposition of the Catholic Monarchy, between 1808 and 1837, which culminated in the birth of what we now understand as Spain. In Nación he offers a fictionalized chronicle of this process through more than four hundred carefully chosen and elaborated scenes. The prologue summarizes the history of the Iberian Peninsula up to the Modern Age and its incorporation into the Western Empire of the Habsburgs, its very important role as the heart of the monarchy that ruled the world during the 16th and 17th centuries, and its adaptation and modernization during the 18th century, already with a Bourbon king. The semantic evolution over time of the words "State", "Country", "Nation", "Homeland" and "Spain" is clear, with the implementation of popular sovereignty through the promulgation of the Constitution of 1837, in which defines the nation almost as we know it today.
