Nocturno de los 14
Sender, Ramón J.
Nocturno de los 14, published in 1969, is an enormously suggestive novel that plays with the notion of life and death. In it everything is real and, at the same time, imagined, dreamlike. One night the protagonist receives a visit from fourteen friends who have already disappeared at his house. They all have something in common: they committed suicide. They come from the other side and with them the protagonist starts a conversation about the reasons for his decision, about exile, love and the meaninglessness of life. All the characters who visit the protagonist were real friends in the author's life, some well-known, such as Ernest Hemingway or the German poet Ernst Toller. Sender thus establishes a game full of surrealist, expressionist images, which subjugates the reader's mind, if he lets himself go.
