After the Civil War, Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd travels through North Texas reading newspaper articles to an audience eager for world news. He tells them of presidents and queens, of glorious struggles, devastating catastrophes and exciting adventures that take place in any corner of the world. Captain Kidd, an elderly widower who has lived through three wars and fought in two, is enjoying his lonely and uprooted existence when he is offered a gold coin for returning an orphaned girl who had been captured by the Kiowas to her relatives in San Antonio. The journey south through four hundred miles of inhospitable territory is going to be difficult and dangerous. Johanna, who has even forgotten her language, thinks of escaping from it as soon as the opportunity presents itself and avoids behaving in a "civilized" way. However, as they progress on their journey, the two strange survivors gradually begin to trust each other, forging a bond between them that, in hostile land, is the difference between life and death.
