Recuerdos e invenciones de Myrtle Beach

Calzada, Gorka

This novel deals with topics such as the traps of memory, the limits of art or the different ways of facing the creative process. But he speaks, above all, of the body: the wounded body, the incorrect body, the political body, the object body. Thus, the story constitutes a celebration of different beauties, outside the norm, such as that of the true protagonist of the book, Jacqueline Dublanche. At thirty-two years old, Elías Ibarra still aspires to become a writer, and the process of searching for his own voice leads him to enroll in the prestigious workshop of Maximilian Petrenko in Columbia, New York. Although he arrives in the city immersed in a deep crisis of self-esteem and feeling inexplicably guilty. He comes from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where he has spent the summer working at an amusement park. For some reason, he is unable to escape from the painful memories of that city, which his teacher takes advantage of to force him to write about everything that happened to him there. Elijah begins to write. And he remembers the oppressive heat of Myrtle Beach, the Calypso motel, the taunts of his colleagues, the panic that caused him to work in front of the public and the police brutality. He relives his complexes, conflicts with certain clients or his shameful drunkenness at Kryptonite... Meanwhile, he collaborates on an art installation with Jacqueline Dublanche, a fat but very popular art student on campus, for which he he will become obsessed. Elijah will never be the same again. And from that moment on, a turbulent outcome will take place, narrated through an original change of shot, which will offer the reader a captivating game of symbols.
