In June 1984 Calvino was invited to hold the chair of the Charles Eliot Norton Poetry Lectures at Harvard University, Massachusetts, during the 1985-1986 academic year. The author prepared a series of conferences choosing as a theme the literary values that he most appreciated and that would be preserved in the new millennium, although he never got to give them, since he died in Italy a week before his departure for the United States.
