Sciascia, Leonardo

Between the oaks and chestnuts of a delightful place, a clearing with a concrete building opens, like a scandalous wound. A hotel, a hermitage? The hierarchs of politics, industry and the Church, all powerful figures, have been locked up for a few days to meditate in the manner of those "spiritual exercises" that St. Ignatius of Loyola defined as "The whole way... ". The peace of the place, however, is violently disrupted by a series of murders. Leonardo Sicascia turns to the detective novel to plot a corrosive metaphor for power. He describes how it is composed and how it manifests itself, and with a story full of tension and irony it places the reader in front of the stark truth: that civil coexistence is corrupted in the experience of injustice.
