Wallace, Alfred Russel
After accompanying H. W. Bates on his exploration of the Amazon (from 1848 to 1852), Alfred Russel Wallace undertook the exploration of the Malay Archipelago with the aim of advancing discoveries on the natural selection of species. As a result of this trip (1854-1862), and six years later, Wallace published The Malay Archipelago (1869), a masterpiece of travel literature and a benchmark for science books of the 19th century.
