Valerie Taylor, a teenage student at Roger Bacon Comprehensive School in Kidlington, north of Oxford, disappears without a trace. Two years later, and shortly after her case is back in the news thanks to a missing persons report in The Sunday Times, Ainley, the investigating inspector, is killed in a traffic accident, and Valerie's parents they receive a letter postmarked from London, apparently written by their daughter, saying that she is well. Inspector Morse and his assistant, Sergeant Lewis, will be assigned to the case. Morse, convinced that Valerie is dead, will try to find out what really happened on the day of her disappearance: the girl had gone home to eat, and was last seen with her school uniform and a bag when she returned to school again.
