It is the fifties, Inspector Mascarell and his wife, Patro, are about to become parents when Barcelona is immersed in a period of social unrest due to the increase in the price of the tram. One day, Pere Humet, a former subordinate of Mascarell before the war, tells him that Piñol, Arnella and Matarrodona, three policemen who had also been under the orders of the ex-inspector, went together in exile, in the Algiers refugee camp, and then worked on the reinforcement of the Maginot Line, until the Germans sent them to Mauthausen. All three survived, with hardship and toil, that hell until the whim of a German officer unleashed horror, forcing Piñol to kill Arnella with a shot to the head. He then forced Humet to do the same, but the gun had only one bullet: Humet was saved and vowed to take revenge on Piñol, who began collaborating with the Germans and he was responsible for the deaths of the other prisoners. Humet confesses to Mascarell that he has returned to Barcelona because he knows that Piñol is in the Catalan capital and wants to do justice. He also tells her that he has cancer and does not have much time left in his life. Miquel agrees to help him and invites him to lunch at his house the next day, but Humet does not show up. When the inspector goes to look for him, he finds the body of the old companion and that of his cousin, who have been stabbed to death. The defendant is Nicolau, the girl's ex-boyfriend, but Mascarell's police instinct tells him that Nicolau is not the culprit.
